Grand Rapids, Mich. (WZZM) Michigan Governor Rick Snyder expressed his appreciation for ArtPrize and Grand Rapids during a visit on Monday.
The governor toured the world's biggest art competition with founder Rick DeVos. Afterward he told a national convention of business and civic leaders ArtPrize is a great example to the rest of the country.
He says when someone comes up with an innovative idea in Grand Rapids, community leaders work together to help make it happen, "You are seeing one of the greatest illustrations I think in the entire country of how important arts and culture are with ArtPrize."
ArtPrize is now in it's 5th year and continues to grow. "ArtPrize is the best illustration I've ever seen of generating not only wonderful art opportunities to see wonderful works, but the economic activity going on in terms of restaurants hotels just general activity going on."
The Governor spoke at a convention underway in Grand Rapids called CEOs for Cities. It involves mayors, business executives and non profit executives, who come together to learn about success stories in other communities.
"If you want to have great arts and culture you need a strong economy, so you have the resources to invest in arts and culture," the Governor told the crowd. "And if you want to have a strong economy you have to have a great quality of life."
