Derek and his wife Kim live in Jenison with their two sons. He is a graduate of the Walter Cronkite School of Broadcast Journalism at Arizona State University.

Some interesting things you might not know about Derek: He spent four seasons traveling with the Arizona Cardinals in the mid-90's shooting game film for the team's coaching staff, He ran with the Olympic torch a week before the start of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, His fast-pitch softball team "Stallard Asphalt" won the Michigan Class-D state championship in 2008,  He coaches lots of little league baseball for his two boys,  He is a huge fan of the St.Louis and Arizona Cardinals,  He split the first 18 years of his life between St.Louis and New Jersey but proudly doesn't have an accent from either,  He is two states short (North Dakota & Alaska) of having visited all 50 states, and lastly he loves numbers and is a stickler with dates on the calendar.
