DETROIT, Mich (WZZM) - For the second time in the school's short 7-year history, Zeeland West is a state football champion.
The Dux (14-0) met Marine City (13-1) in the Division 4 state championship game Friday night at Ford Field.
Marine City opened the scoring in the first quarter when quarterback Adam Kroll hooked up with Anthony Scarcelli for a 52-yard touchdown, but on the ensuing kickoff, the Dux Brad Mesbergen took the kick from his own 3-yard line and then ran for a state-record 97-yard return for touchdown.
Zeeland West added the 2-point conversion, grabbed an 8-7 lead, and never trailed in the game again.
Dux quarterback, Clay Coatney was 6-of-9 for 122 yards passing and 2 touchdowns.
Kyle Kujawa had 11 rushing attempts for 99 yards, including a back-breaking 54-yard touchdown carry just before half, giving the Dux a 24-7 lead at the break.
Zeeland West scored three more touchdown in the second half, including an interception return by Mesbergen which gave the Dux the 45-7 lead.
Coatney rushed for 30 yards on 7 carries. Derek Postma contributed with 60 yards rushing on 13 carries, while Marcus Lambert chipped in with 4 carries, good for 39 yards on the ground, including a touchdown.
The Dux last state championship came in 2006, just two years after the school came into existence.
