Jennifer Pascua gets her hair cut
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - It's been about two months since WZZM 13's Jennifer Pascua donated 12 inches of her hair, chopped off to help create a wig for someone in West Michigan.
That someone was Erin Zundel who suffers from Ectodermal Dysplasia. It's an inherited disorder involving defects in the hair, nails, sweat glands and teeth. People suffering from this condition have extremely sparse hair.
Zundel explains, "My hair won't grow past this point and it will just start falling out. If it gets longer, it just falls out. People aren't very nice about it. They don't take it very well when people have short hair or balding. Like I've had cases in high school where my hair would fall out in patches like I had patches of bald spots and kids would make fun of me. And I started wearing wigs. It's just important for me to feel comfortable going out in public sometimes."
That's where Children With Hair Loss can help. The Michigan-based organization gives human hair wigs to children at no cost. Creating a wig with WZZM 13's Jennifer Pascua's hair was a process that certainly didn't happen overnight. The foot of hair she donated traveled across the country in order to make Erin a gift she will be excited about.
Zundel says, "The synthetic I have now waiting for my new wig to come in, it's already getting bad and that makes me feel self conscious. To be able to have a real wig free...I'm just completely grateful for it."
At Salon Nouveau, Children with Hair Loss volunteer Sharon Potter packed up Pascua's ponytails, headed to the downtown Grand Rapids post office and sent off the package. It arrived at the main offices in South Rockwood, MI where it was checked in and sent out to the wig manufacturer John Renau in Vista, California. It took roughly a month to create, which included color and style transformation.
On Tuesday, the wig arrived back in Grand Rapids. During the WZZM 13 Morning News, Potter and Pascua presented Zundel with her new wig.
Sharon Potter is hosting a fundraiser on Wednesday from 9a.m.-2 p.m. at Salon Nouveau. 100% of the proceeds from services will be donated to Children With Hair Loss.
