(USA Today) - Three people are dead following a shooting at a Maryland mall, Howard County, MD police said.
The victims at The Mall in Columbia include the suspected shooter, police said.
"Three people confirmed dead at Columbia Mall. Victims unknown at this time," the department reported on its Twitter feed.
The department, in a tweet, said the call came into 911 around 11:15 a.m. that shots were fired at The Mall in Columbia. Responding officers found the bodies, including "one found near a gun and ammunition."
Police are asking people in the mall to stay where they are until officers confirm that the area is safe.
Some shoppers reported hearing gunfire before fleeing the mall, The Baltimore Sun reported.
Columbia, with a population of about 100,000 people, was built in the 1960s as a planned community of 10 "villages." Columbia is about 18 miles from Baltimore and 24 miles from Washington, D.C.
