(WZZM) -- With wind gusts between 10 and 20 miles per hour it can only take 30 minutes for you to develop frostbite in single digit temperatures. Even the mildest forms of frostbite can leave lasting nerve damage.
The first warning sign is bright red skin, with a white tint. As frostbite gets worse, the skin gets more and more discolored: White, then gray, then black.
Often most people showing symptoms of frostbite will be so cold they wont be able to feel it. You should pay attention to friends or family members if you are spending time outside.
To warm the skin, you should NOT run it under hot water. You should gradually warm skin with body heat, and get inside as quickly as possible.
