GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Eight murders in six weeks in December and January mobilized concerned citizens to form a group called the Stop It! Community Initiative. After a series of community forums, the data has been analyzed and will be presented in a public meeting tonight. The meeting starts at 5:00pm at the Gerald Ford Middle School, 851 Madison, SE.
One of the organizers, the Rev. Jermone Glenn, said, "This initiative from the very beginning has been about developing a plan of action, but first we had to hear from the people. Now we can begin to move forward in developing a plan. As the saying goes, failing to plan is planning to fail."
Grand Rapids Police Captain Jeff Hertell said Grand Rapids has experienced two homicides since the Stop It! effort began in mid-January. Both of those killings occurred in March.
