(WZZM) - Greenthumb Rick Vuyst calls it the good, the bad and the ugly. After a very warm March and cool April, there are plants in our landscaping that fall into each category.
The good would be Trilliums. They're off to a nice start this May. Bleeding Hearts are also blooming this month.
Peonies will start to bloom this month and you'll want to back off on the nitrogen. Rick says otherwise you'll get a lighter growth and secondly you'll notice that ants love them, but not to worry. They won't harm anything.
When it comes to the bad and ugly this year, Japanese Maples are paying the price for our early warm-up followed by the April freeze. You've probably also noticed Hostas are struggling. Rick recommends you prune off the bad leaves, additional foliage will come back throughout the year.
