Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain

Mercy Health Saint Mary's would like to invite the West Michigan community to join our 2,900 colleagues in our annual, "Hold It Through the Holidays" wellness challenge. This eight-week event begins November 18, the week before Thanksgiving and ends January 10, the week after New Year's Day. Our challenge and yours, is to not gain more than one pound this holiday season. Of course, you may lose weight, but your ultimate goal is to make this the season of no weight gain!
On average, a healthy adult gains only one pound during the holiday season. However; adults who are overweight or obese may gain as much as 5 pounds. Hold it Through the Holidays is a fun way for you to keep your weight during the holidays under control. You can participate at home, as a family, at work with colleagues, or at church with fellow parishioners. It's as easy as 1-2-3.

Step 1: Weigh in on your scale at home and write down your weight the week of November 18.

We will be posting tips each Monday and Thursday to help you and your family avoid weight gain. Our healthy holiday tips will help you ring in the new year with a 1) healthier diet, 2) more active lifestyle 3) well rested 4) and stress that is well-controlled!

Step 3: Set a reward. If you are playing at home, have your family identify what the reward should be. Examples include two movie tickets, a free 1-month gym membership or a fitness ball that you can use for exercise or to sit on and do homework.
At Mercy Health, we encourage our colleagues to participate as individuals or teams which creates a lot of fun. We find that people who participate on a team or with a partner are more likely to be successful and follow their commitment through to the week after New Year's. Some of our team names have been "LUNG" (Let Us Not Gain), our pulmonary team and "The Beating Hearts," our cardiac rehab group.
