GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.,(WZZM) - The nation's first-ever community-wide festival of laughter, Gilda's LaughFest, has announced the final schedule of events including the community kickoff celebration, closing event and a free dance party.
Laughfest will kick off by attempting to set a world record at Rosa Parks Circle at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 10th. Organizers are hoping to entice 500 people to participate in tossing rubber chickens, which would break the record of 265 in April of 2010 just outside of Boston. Special guests during the opening celebration will include: Michael Radner, brother of the late Gilda Radner, Tim Cusack, and David Dyer.
After the rubber chicken toss participants are encouraged to go to 10 designated restaurants where traveling comedy troupes will visit. LaughScat will include special drawings and discounts at all participating restaurants: 25 Kitchen + Bar, Bar Divani, The B.O.B., J. Gardella's Tavern, Louis Benton, McFadden's Restaurant & Saloon, Mojo's Dueling Piano Bar & Restaurant, Peppino's Grille and Pizzeria Sports Lounge and the Republic.
LaughFest will hold a free community dance party and concert on Saturday, March 19 at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in the Ambassador Ballroom. Local band, Mid-Life Crisis, will perform until midnight.
Laughfest will conclude with a community event on Calder Plaza at 3 p.m. on March 20th. Participants will be given a commemorative placard to hold while creating a yellow smiley face that will be photographed from the air. The Last Laugh will prove that Grand Rapids is not a dying city, as one national magazine recently wrote, but that Grand Rapids is "dying" of laughter.
