GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Probably the most difficult thing about depression is that many of us can have a loved one suffering from it and we don't even know it. Sometimes once we recognize, it's too late.
This is the story of a young girl whose mother's depression led to her suicide.
A year ago, 15-year-old Kaitlin Brand began to see a change in her mother. "She wasn't full of life like she used to be, and she was sad a lot and she didn't laugh out loud like she used to," says Kaitlin.
It started after a series of surgeries left Kaitlin's mom struggling with depression. "I started to think that I was losing her in a sense."
And she was.
Kaitlin found her mother hanging in the woods behind her home just two weeks before her 16th birthday. "I walked up and then I found her. I felt like I was in a movie or something because it didn't seem like it was really happening."
And despite the overwhelming grief and disbelief, Kaitlin found the strength to give her mother's life meaning. "I just don't want anyone else to feel the way that I have felt through this."
So she made video using her mothers favorite song, "If I Die Young" by the band, Perry.
She posted it on her blog and then on YouTube, hoping to reach just a few people suffering like her mother.
"I just want to impact other people's lives, so they know that they don't have to struggle with depression and stuff. And they can get help and it's a good thing to get help."
Within the first week her video had 47,000 views.
