WZZM 13, the Gannett owned ABC affiliate in Grand Rapids, MI and Gannett Corporation's President and CEO Gracia Martore is pleased to announce the largest day of volunteering in the USA! On Saturday, October 27th every Gannett property nationwide will organize and spend the day helping in their local communities for the annual Make a Difference Day.
Kids Food Basket began in 2001 when a local Grand Rapids Public School Principal found some of her students digging through a dumpster looking for something to eat. When longtime Meals-on-Wheels volunteer Mary K. Hoodhood heard this story she took immediate action and began her pledge to 'attack hunger in Grand Rapids."
Today, Kids Food Basket serves more than 48-hundred children at 32 schools with a volunteer staff of 150 people. This non-profit organization was even recognized by President Obama in 2010 with the second highest civilian award, the Presidential Citizens Medal.
"We looked at a lot of local charitable causes in West Michigan but this one kept floating to the top of the list," said WZZM Programming and Community Director Catherine Behrendt, "and it's such a wonderful way for parents to teach their own children about volunteering and serving others. It's difficult for many American kids to imagine a life without supper".
