ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- Firefighters are on the scene of a structure fire on M-37 near 7 Mile Road NW.

Around 7 p.m. Wednesday, dispatchers received calls that the Alpine Golf Club lodge was fully engulfed in flames. The golf course is located at 6320 Alpine Ave NW.

"We arrived on the scene, and a lot of flames were showing," says Deputy Chief Mike Lasko with the Alpine Township Fire Department.  "It pretty much worked its way through the building before we got here."

Lasko says it's too soon to say what may have caused the fire.

The Alpine Golf Club opened in 1964, according to its website.  The owner was remodeling the clubhouse -- and preparing to open the course for the season on Thursday.

"It's kind of a blessing," says golf course employee Dave Kik. "It needed remodeling, and he was in the process of doing that this year.  It's kind of sad to see it burn, but we'll get a new clubhouse hopefully out of it."

"I played there as a teenager," says Mark Stowe, who lives near the course.  "I hope they can come back and do well, because we enjoyed the course. We enjoy the people who run it. Hopefully they can put up a tent, build a new clubhouse, and the community will support them."

The owner says it will take him a day or two to make a plan for the upcoming golf season, but the course was not damaged and is ready to play."

Firefighters from Alpine Township, Sparta, Tallmadge Township, and Kent City responded to the blaze.

Northbound Alpine Avenue was closed for a short time at 7 Mile Road while crews worked to extinguish the flames.
