KENTWOOD, Mich. (WZZM) -- An East Kentwood High School boys track athlete is being investigated for sexually assaulting a member of the girls track team after a practice.

Jaylen Young, 17, is charged with two counts of 3rd degree criminal sexual conduct. Investigators say on March 26, he took the female student into a secluded area of the high school and forced sexual acts upon her.

In a affidavit of probable cause from the Kent County Sheriff's Department, obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, by WZZM 13, investigators say Young did admit to one of the forced sexual acts.

In a letter from school superintendent Dr. Scott Palczewski, the district informed parents in the district of the incident Wednesday.

The alleged assault happened on the Tuesday before spring break, but one of the track coaches was notified by the grandmother of the victim on Monday of spring break. The grandmother informed the coach that she had filed police charges against the male student.

The grandmother told the coach that after practice the male student and her granddaughter went to a secluded location at the 10-12 building where he made advances on her that led to the sexual assault.

Palczewski says in the letter that the school is working closely with the Kent County Sheriff's Department and the families of both students. The district held staff meetings Tuesday to inform employees of the incident.

We'll have more details when they become available. Below is the entire letter sent to families in the district:

April 9, 2013

Dear Parents:

One of our goals is to always keep you informed when incidents occur in the district. We wanted you to know that on the Monday of spring break we were notified of a possible situation involving two of our track team members.

On the Monday of spring break one of our track coaches was contacted by the grandmother of a female track team member and informed him that she had filed police charges against a male track team member. The grandmother indicated that on the Tuesday before spring break, after practice, the male track team member and her granddaughter went to a secluded location at the 10-12 building. The grandmother alleged that when they arrived at the location, the male student made advances towards her granddaughter, leading to an assault. Since we learned of this incident, the district has worked closely with the Kent County Sheriff's Department and has been in regular contact with the families of both students.

On Tuesday morning a staff meeting was held with the East Kentwood Freshman Campus and 10-12 building staff to inform them of the incident and to let them know that we are doing everything possible to support this young lady and her family. We have met with her coach, her family and have also involved her counselor.

The safety of students and staff has always been a priority in our school district and we will not let the actions of a single individual deter us from our continued focus on the high behavioral and academic expectations for our students.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Dr. Scott Palczewski
Superintendent
