Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Mariners fans were treated to a pitcher's duel for the second time in as many days.

This time, however, the Seattle Mariners were on top, shutting down the Detroit Tigers, 2-0, on Thursday to avoid a three-game sweep.

Neither team found much success, until the seventh inning, when Kyle Seager and Endy Chavez each drove in one run on back-to-back hits. It was all the offense that was needed to grab the win.

Hisashi Iwakuma gave up just three hits and a walk over six innings for the Mariners, who lost in 14 innings against Detroit on Wednesday. Carter Capps (1-1) allowed two hits and a walk over two innings of relief to pick up the win. Tom Wilhelmsen pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his sixth save of the season.

Justin Verlander (2-2) got the start for the Tigers and fanned twelve over seven innings but the lack of run support prevented him from earning a win.

With two outs in the seventh, Robert Andino hit a single. Seager then doubled, scoring Andino. Chavez followed with a single to bring Seager home.

Game Notes

Chavez had six putouts ... Jason Bay was 0-for-4 and struck out three times for Seattle ... Detroit's Prince Fielder hit a double, his sixth of the season ... Verlander threw 126 pitches while Iwakuma threw 70 pitches ... Detroit is 5-11 over its last 16 matchups against Seattle ... The Tigers have not swept the Mariners at Safeco Field since April 21-23, 2006.
