The 2012 Relay for Life event at East Kentwood High School.

KENTWOOD, Mich. (WZZM) - The American Cancer Society's community walk fundraiser is kicking off at East Kentwood High School Friday.

Many weekends this spring, communities across the country will take to the track to fight back against cancer in Relay for Life.

The event raises money and awareness about the disease that has impacted so many lives in West Michigan and all over the world.

Fundraising teams camp out, and team members take turns walking around the track. There is also on-site entertainment and food tents.

For Ray Olszewski, the Relay is personal.   Cancer claimed his father's life when Olszewski was 16, and his wife has had two bouts with the disease.    He says cancer has really hit young adults in Kentwood over the past year.

"Kentwood lost an alum - he's 22 - this past spring and we know of four other young kids that have got cancer in Kentwood - and that's just Kentwood."

Kentwood's Relay is bringing in 38 teams this year. The event starts at noon on Friday at East Kentwood High School, and will continue until noon on Saturday.
