GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - A Grand Haven man has been sentenced to six months in prison and ordered to pay over $119,000 after pleading guilty to filing a false tax return.

Matthew Daniels, 46, pleaded guilty in January to filing false returns in 2007 and 2008.  His 2008 tax return was under-reported by over $360,000 and Judge Robert Holmes Bell determined the taxes owed on that amount to be $119,000.

"Cheating on your taxes is the same as stealing," said IRS Criminal Investigations Special Agent in Charge, Erick Martinez, in a press release from U.S. District Attorney Patrick Miles, Jr.  "We should not expect the honest taxpayer to foot the bill for those who hide income from the IRS."
