BROOMFIELD TWP., Mich. (WZZM) - A Big Rapids man died Tuesday night after stopping to see if he could help a motorist on M-20.

The crash happened about 10:00pm on M-20, west of Sherman Road in Isabella County.

The Isabella County Sheriff says that a vehicle had stopped on M-20 with its hazard lights on.  That driver called 911 to report a dead deer in the roadway.  Jaremy Todd Stiles, 37, pulled up to the vehicle to see if the driver needed any assistance.  He turned off his lights and walked up to the driver.

As Stiles was returning to his vehicle, a Ford F-250 pickup driven by an Alanson, Michigan man approached and swerved to avoid the dead deer in the road.  Investigators believe that Stiles jumped into the ditch to avoid the vehicle, but the driver of the pickup also swerved into the ditch to avoid where Stiles had been standing.  Stiles was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.

A fund has been set up to help the Stiles family. Click here for that information.

The accident remains under investigation.
