EAST LANSING, Mich. (WZZM) - Some Michigan State University students received an alarming message from the campus emergency alert system Tuesday night.

The school's police department says around the time they were sending out messages of a tornado warning, the system malfunctioned and half of the students received a warning that there was a gunman on campus.

That warning was false and police say they're working to fix the problem.
