UPDATE, 4:30 a.m. July 1 --- The pilot is identified as Brian Cannon of Grand Haven. He says he started having engine problems right after take-off. Cannon suffered internal injuries and is recovering in the hospital.
UPDATE, 4:20 p.m. --- The 40-year old pilot's injuries are not life-threatening. He remained conscious throughout.
Investigators say the pilot tried to land in Pottawattomie Bayou, but wound up hitting a tree in a backyard.
UPDATE, 2:00 p.m. -- The pilot of the plane has been taken to the hospital. His condition is not known.
The aircraft was a homemade, experimental plane. Pottawattomie Bayou is not far from the Grand Haven Memorial Air Park.
GRAND HAVEN TWP (WZZM) -- Ottawa County dispatchers confirm a small plane has crashed near Pottawattomie Park near Grand Haven.
The crash happened just after 1:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
There is no word on how many people, if any, have been hurt. The plane is leaking fuel, but it's not clear if that fuel is leaking into Pottawattomie Bayou.
