Holland, Mich. (WZZM) The American Red Cross of West Michigan will be helping with disaster relief in Colorado.

Heavy rains have caused massive flooding in the area. Regional Chief Operating Officer Mike Mitchell is heading out west to help for at least 2 weeks.

Mitchell, also the Chapter Executive for the American Red Cross of Ottawa County in Holland, will be working as a Response Networking Manager in Colorado where he will manage the technology being used within the disaster relief operation.

The Red Cross has opened seven overnight shelters in Larimer, Weld, Boulder and Jefferson County Colorado.

Mitchell will leave for Denver Saturday. "Events like these are what we practice for," said Mitchell. "We're always preparing during non-disaster times, and when something happens, we're ready to respond."
