(WZZM) - It's "Friends for Life" Day and West Michigan's 16th "Race for the Cure" is now just two weeks away.
There will be hundreds of breast cancer survivors among the thousands at the race on Saturday, September 28th at Rivertown Crossings Mall in Grandville.
Dorie Mates is one of them. She was diagnosed with breast cancer two and a half years ago. She'll be participating in the race for the first time this year.
In addition to the challenge of her first 5K, Dorie lives with another challenge. Dorie is completely blind. She was born blind, but doesn't let that stop her from doing the things she loves. She reads the braille Bible, sings her favorite passages and accompanies her husband, Bob, when he plays the guitar. She's set her mind to walking in Race for the Cure because she wants other survivors to know they are not alone and she wants to show her support.
You can register online for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure at www.komenwestmichigan.org
WZZM 13's Juliet Dragos & Valerie Lego will be emceeing on race day. There will also be a WZZM 13 team taking part in the event. So please join them on Saturday, September 28th at Rivertown Crossings Mall.
