GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Researchers at Grand Valley State University's Johnson Center for Philanthropy are launching a new effort to learn about life in the greater Grand Rapids area.

The effort is called VoiceGR and begins September 16.

Researchers will look into topics such as health care, education, employment status, and racial equality, to learn more about the needs and wants of community members.

They are hoping the information will help organizations better understand the population down to the neighborhood level, rather than look at Grand Rapids as a whole.

"Most social service agencies in the community do their own individual surveys of small populations, but no one has done a large, city-wide survey to assess basic needs," said Jerry Johnson, director of research for the Johnson Center's Community Research Institute. "This is a larger sample size, and we are confident we'll be able to establish a much more accurate baseline of what residents want by capturing all of the voices in the community."
