GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Dozens of artists are showcasing their work at Cathedral Square in Grand Rapids. The venue, which is part of the Diocese of Grand Rapids, features pieces that try to convey particular messages about the artists and their communities.
"First, we really want to focus on the quality of the work, how well it is made and the intention behind the artist," said Liz Hertl, curator for Cathedral Square.
Cathedral Square is obviously not in the heart of downtown where most of the ArtPrize action is. However, Hertl encourages people interested in seeing a variety of interesting and captivating art pieces to visit the venue which has three separate gallery spaces.
"This is the first time we've been able to use this large room, which is great because now we can host large works of art," she said. "In particular, I wanted to find colorful, energetic pieces that have serious tones as well being fun."
Art featured by 38 artists from around the country and from Canada is on display. One entry, "Open House," is located outside and artist, Ryan Greaves worked with Habitat Young Professionals of Kent County to bring awareness to the issue of sustainable housing.
"It is an installation. Each wall kind of goes through the benefit to communities, children and economies. And, also on the inside explores some of the milestones that Habitat has reached," he said.
"We wanted to do something artistic to bring Habitat's mission into ArtPrize," said president of HYP president, Keagan Rushmore. "For one thing it (ArtPrize) is a community event and we know that people like to be involved in art."
Rushmore said they wanted a piece that was interactive and would allow people to connect to the art and the work Habitat is doing in West Michigan.
"Habitats mission for the next two years is not to just build houses but build communities. They are going to be renovating and building 200 homes on the southwest side of Grand Rapids with their "building Blocks" campaign," he said.
The Cathedral Square venue is located at 360 Division Ave S. That is on the corner of Division and Wealthy.
