Making it in Michigan conference

LANSING (WZZM) -- Michigan is a major food producing state and more entrepreneurs are joining the industry every day, making their own sauces, chips and special recipes.

Tuesday food producers gathered in Lansing to showcase the help they've received from Michigan State University's Product Center.

"It really has to do with buying local-- that has been a very strong food trend for several years now," said Chris Peterson, director of the Product Center.

The Center has existed for 10 years. In that time, they've conducted 30,000 one-on-one counseling sessions with people who want to start their own food product business.

Randy "Tex" Lockwood started his business, Sauces Gone Wild, after losing his computer job several years ago. It offers nine varieties of chicken wing sauce and it's carried in restaurants and stores statewide. "

"If you just put your mind to it, you can do anything you want. I work 16 hours a day, but luckily I love what I do. It's not all work when I get to go out to do a promo at a bar and eat some chicken wings; that's as good as a guy can get," Lockwood said.
