Green Bay, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Frank Kaminsky collected 16 points and
eight rebounds, as No. 20 Wisconsin slipped past Green Bay, 69-66, on Saturday
at Resch Center.
Kaminsky's layup with 3:05 left gave Wisconsin a 64-60 edge, but the Badgers
failed to register a field goal the rest of the way, allowing Green Bay to get
within one after Keifer Sykes knocked down consecutive jumpers.
Sykes, who finished with a game-high 32 points, missed a potential go-ahead
jumper on Green Bay's next touch before Josh Gasser buried a pair of free
throws to make it 67-64 with 26 seconds left.
Carrington Love's layup at the other end again brought the Phoenix within one
before Traevon Jackson split two free throws to leave the margin at two.
Sykes missed a layup on Green Bay's next possession and after Kaminsky went 1-
of-2 from the charity stripe, Sykes misfired on a three-point try to seal the
Sam Dekker donated 13 points and seven rebounds while Gasser finished with 11
points and six boards for the Badgers (3-0), who were coming off a 59-53
victory over No. 11 Florida.
Greg Mays registered nine points and six boards for the Phoenix (1-1), who
opened their season with a 71-49 win over Northern Michigan.
A tightly-contested first half found Green Bay clinging to a 25-23 lead with
7:46 left in the frame before the Badgers reeled off nine straight points,
capped by Kaminsky's jumper that made it 32-25 with 2:40 left.
Green Bay got within five by the end of the half before opening the second
stanza on a 10-1 surge that Sykes capped with a layup to give the Phoenix a
39-35 edge just over three minutes into the second.
Mays' three-point play a bit later moved the margin to 50-43, but Kaminsky
countered with a triple to spark a 17-4 Wisconsin swing that Jackson finished
with a layup to put the Badgers in front, 60-54, with 6:04 remaining.
Wisconsin has won 19 of the last 20 meetings with Green Bay ... Jackson
finished with six points and four rebounds ... Green Bay scored 14 fast-break
points compared to zero for Wisconsin ... Wisconsin went 5-for-18 from 3-point
range, while Green Bay connected on 3-of-18 shots from long range.
