GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Spectrum Health is announcing a major step forward in the Hospital's transplant program.
Spectrum announced that doctors performed West Michigan's first combined heart and lung transplant in August 2013.
At a media conference at 10:00 this morning, doctors plan to introduce the heart lung transplant patient and also answer questions about the procedure.
Spectrum Health has performed dozens of separate heart transplants and lung transplants, but this is the first announcement of a combined transplant for the program.
A Spectrum spokesperson also says this was the first combined heart lung transplant performed in the state of Michigan since 1999.
