GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- One of West Michigan's veteran broadcasters is leaving the airwaves this week.
WOOD Radio's Gary Allen will retire Friday, but he's being honored by his station and peers Thursday. Allen will headline a 12-hour marathon, broadcast from Celebration Cinema North at East Beltline Ave. and Knapp St. NE.
The Detroit native has been part of the WOOD-AM'S morning show since 1981. Allen started on the show doing weather, but moved up to the host's spot in 1989.
Local media personalities are scheduled to stop in at the remote studio throughout the day to wish Allen well. WZZM 13's Juliet Dragos and Catherine Behrendt will be on air with him around 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
His broadcast partner, Steve Kelly, will stay on WOOD-AM/FM's morning show with new members of the team to be announced later.
