The new movie "Dallas Buyers Club" is based on the true story of Ron Woodruff. As an electrician and rodeo bull rider in 1985, it was a shock to be diagnosed (as a heterosexual male) with HIV when so little was known about the disease. Given just 30 days to live and no treatments that were FDA approved, Woodruff began researching medications from OTHER countries. He soon went on to found the "Dallas Buyer's Club" - smuggling in successful medications from other countries to the ire of the FDA. The movie stars Matthew McConaughey as Woodruff (who dropped 50 lbs for the role), Jared Leto as Rayan (an HIV postitive cross dresser) and Jennifer Garner as Dr. Eve Saks (an HIV doctor and researcher).
"Dallas Buyers Club" opens Friday, 11/22, here in Grand Rapids at Celebration Cinema North.
