(WZZM) - Greenthumb Rick Vuyst says a little mulch can go a long way.
Recently a friend of his took temperature readings around his lawn in San Antonio, Texas and found mulch made a big difference in dropping the temperatures nearly 20 degrees, which is very important during this hot spell.
As always however, never pile it too high, because it could cause problems with watering and nutrients.
Rick is also looking at his impatiens to see if they're coming down with Downy Mildew. It's a white-powdery substance underneath the foliage.
So far, Rick's plants are showing signs of it, but it could still arrive, so you'll need to keep an eye out for it. If you had it last-year, you could get it back, so you'll want to plant your impatiens in a new spot because the mildew can live in the soil year-round.
