Holland, Mich. (WZZM) Ottawa County has completed the 2013 dog census. Officials say county interns checked canines at 20,302 home without registered dogs on record.

Census workers determined 22% of the homes did not have their pets properly licensed. Based on the findings the county estimates 21,000 dogs within the county are not licensed.

Since 2003 the number of dogs registered with the county has dropped steadily. 17,878 dogs were documented last year down from 20,628 in 2003.

Michigan law requires homeowners to license their dogs. They may be purchased online, by mail or in person. Cost varies between $10.00 and $70.00. If you would like to buy one you can visit miOttawa.org or the county where you live.
