WALKER, Mich. (WZZM) - West Michigan-based Meijer is now one of the many companies in America offering employees money and prizes if they lose weight and adopt healthy habits.
This spring, Meijer employees are participating in what the company calls the "Nu-Me-Weight Loss Challenge."
Teams of Meijer employees taking the challenge get weighed in March 1. The contest lasts three months. At the end of May, teams that lose the most weight will share $15,000 in prize money.
"It's primarily focused on eating healthier, being more physically active and being able to maintain that for the rest of your life," explains Meijer wellness program specialist Amanda Senecal. "It creates a very fun environment and increases employee morale. People are really excited."
A recent study by the Mayo Clinic finds employees tend to lose more weight when they are offered money.
Researchers say other ways to motivate people often don't work and financial incentives show a lot of potential.
