Grand Rapids - A West Michigan doctor has opened a new school to train a new generation of dental assistants.

Doctor Kathi Wilson created the Great Lakes School of Dental Assisting on the second floor of her practice.

She says her school will cost less than most dental assisting schools and train students to deal with all types of technology.

Much of the equipment was donated by other dentists in the area.

Wilson will offer two classes a week for 13 weeks.

"It's a lot of hands on," said Wilson. "My program is unique that each class is three hours, two hours of hands on and then an hour of lecture, every class. That's the best way to learn to be a dental assistant because that's what we're doing in real life."

Wilson says the school is open for enrollment right now. She hopes to start classes in June.
