GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Congenital heart conditions don't just affect children -- they affect the adults who still live with the condition decades later.

Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids is now equipped to help those patients -- the hospital has hired Dr. Marcus Haw, a pediatric cardiac surgeon from Harefield Hospital in London, England.

Haw studied under Spectrum Health heart transplant surgeon Dr. Asgar Kahgahni, who asked Haw to join the cardiac surgery program a year ago.  Dr. Kahgahni wanted Haw to give care to infants and children with congenital heart problems, and to the growing number of adults with the conditions.

"We now have a large population who are young adults may who've had very complicated repairs, whose tubes are going to be slightly wrong as they get older," says Dr. Haw.  "They're going to need help."

Haw says he expects the pediatric cardiac surgery program will perform nearly 200 surgeries a year, allowing families to stay close to home while their child undergoes treatment.
