The laser tests conducted at Ford International Airport.
KENT COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM)- Scientists say lasers are the communication wave of the future high in the sky. And those lasers were on display Wednesday at the Ford International Airport.
Researchers from the Air Force and the University of Notre Dame conducted ground based jet to jet laser beam tests. The experiments will help the development of laser-based communications capabilities for airplanes in flight.
Project Manager Kevin Tessmer said, "What you're doing today, you'll see 20 years down the road. This technology now is at this level, and 20 years it will be here. So you start thinking well, 20 years ago I worked on that project, so that is really exciting."
The lasers can be used for things like high speed internet access for air travelers and video feeds from unmanned flights.
