The Muskegon County road commission bought "Big Green" in 2000 for $20,000.
MONTAGUE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM)--It's not every winter the Muskegon County road commission needs to use the biggest machine in its arsenal of snow removal equipment.
"Big Green," as it referred to at the road commission, is a massive snowblower. Tuesday, Big Green was called on to clear deep snow drifts from Whitbeck Road in Montague Township.
The road commission purchased the snowblower at a military surplus auction in 2000 for around $20,000. At one time, it was used to clear snow from runways at an Air Force Base in Michigan's upper peninsula.
The machine requires two operators, one to steer the truck, another to control the snowblower. The 1,000 horse power engine can throw snow 150 feet. Big Green crawls at three miles per hour and is eight feet tall.
