GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- A Michigan medical clinic owner has pleaded guilty in a federal health kickback case.

Babubhai Rathod of Mount Pleasant pleaded guilty to conspiracy to pay and receive health care kickbacks, a potential five-year felony. He's the owner and operator of medical clinics, outpatient rehabilitation facilities and home health care companies across the state.

The Grand Rapids Press reports eight defendants have been convicted in a scheme the government alleges funneled patients to clinics Rathod owned.

He operated Lakeshore Spine & Pain P.C., based in Ludington, with numerous offices in Michigan, and U.S. Rehab Services P.C., with offices around the state, including Grand Rapids, Howard City, Lansing and Mount Pleasant.

A ninth defendant stands trial this week in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids.
