HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM) -- Leaders of the city's public safety department have named their firefighter and police officer of the year for 2012.
Heidi Canfield, the firefighter of the year, started as a part-time paid firefighter in 2003. Three years later, the Hamilton high School graduate became the first woman to be a full-time career firefighter in Holland. Canfield's peers nominated her based on her character and positive attitude. She has been a peer fitness trainer with the fire department and has worked with community organizations like the Center for Women in Transition.
Sergeant Keith Mulder, the police officer of the year, started with the Holland Police Department as a cadet in 1991. The Holland Christian High School and Calvin College graduate has a bachelor's degree in psychology, and was hired on as a full-time officer in 1993. Mulder was promoted to patrol sergeant in 2001, and was appointed training sergeant in 2006. He is currently the leader of the Special Enforcement Team (SWAT).
Canfield and Mulder recently received their honors at the public safety department's annual Christmas party.
