Malachi and Evangeline Karns
GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WZZM) -- A lakeshore family is celebrating a surprise delivery.
For months, Jessica Karns and her husband Tyler prepared to give birth at home, taking hypno-birthing classes and meeting with a midwife. But their son surprised them by coming two weeks early.
Four and a half hours after her contractions started, Jessica Karns gave birth to 6 lb. 7 oz. Malachi. Minutes later, the midwife informed them of another surprise.
"Her face just goes blank and she says, 'There's another baby in there'," remembers Tyler
"No reason to believe that there would ever be twins, so it was very surprising," says Jessica.
Because Malachi's twin was breach, the Karnses had to go to the hospital for a cesarean section. Evangeline was born less than an hour later, weighing 4 lb. 11 oz.
"We didn't know the sex of the baby before hand so we had a boy and a girl name picked out," Tyler says. "It was a girl, so we got to use them both."
"Even though were weren't expecting a second child, that we're incredibly grateful for her and she's very, very special," says Jessica.
Although the Karnses never had an ultrasound, they say Jessica didn't fit the measurements for having twins. There was no family history of multiples and they never heard a second heartbeat.
