HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM) - A Holland motel that was scheduled to close on Monday, will remain open for now. The Economy Inn on U.S. 31 was facing 22 pages of city violations, including electrical and plumbing issues, as well as bed bugs.

On Friday, city inspectors reviewed thousands of dollars of improvements and decided to allow the owners to keep some of the motel open.

Over the past weekend, there were major repairs at the Economy Inn, including carpets thrown out and sinks replaced. During Friday's inspection, there were freshly painted walls, new blankets, and a transformed bathroom in some of the rooms.

"That's all brand new tile, every room will be like that," says Perry Michael, Maintenance Director for the Economy Inn.

The motel also hired a pest control and plumbing service.

"We will have to have a plumbing inspector do a final inspection on the plumbing permit, but I can tell if a sink has been replaced or a faucet is leaking," says Cindy Osman, Assistant Director of Holland's Community and Neighborhood Services Department.

Fire officials also say the fire alarms were intact.

"That was an issue for us," says Lieutenant John Vanderkooy, Fire Marshal for Holland Fire Department. "I haven't seen any problems yet."

After visiting several rooms, city inspectors allowed the first floor to remain open.

"Violations are corrected and they're moving along quickly," says Osman.

Michaels says the motel is also working on a plan to reduce police calls.

"We're talking to anyone who stays here more than a week or so, and if they're (police) called too many times, they're (motel guests) out," says Michaels.

"We're going to continue progress inspections and as long as you're making progress, we're not going to close you down," says Osman to Michaels.

Michaels estimates repairs cost more than $10,000. City inspectors say the second floor of the Economy Inn will remain closed to new guests, until further improvements are completed.
