GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - If a superstorm like Sandy hit West Michigan, WZZM 13 would be able to stay on the air because of the large generator by our building.

As the winter season approaches, there are things you should look for and how to properly run one outside your home.

We spoke to John Mallandine from Schaafsma Heating and Cooling on advice for generator use:

  • Get a new extension cord, and make sure it is grounded (has three prongs)
  • You also want to buy a grounding rod in case there is a short circuit
  • Move the generator about 25 feet from your house to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning from the unit's exhaust
  • Plug your appliances into the extension cord BEFORE plugging the cord into the generator
  • Larger generators require the installation of a transfer switch to prevent electrocution
