13 On Your Side: DTE billing problems

GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WZZM) -- DTE's "budget wise" plan is supposed to keep energy bills around the same amount each month. But a West Michigan woman says the program didn't stop her from getting a bill three times higher than normal. That's when she contacted 13 On Your Side. 

Loraine Hoffman's bill went from about $50.00 a month to more than $150.00. She couldn't resolve the issue with managers so we called DTE ourselves to see what we could resolve. "I just can't afford that," Hoffman is on social security and a fixed income.

"I went on the budget system with DTE thinking it would even out my payments so I wouldn't have a big winter bill."

Instead-- she got a huge summer bill after DTE first sent her a check to credit her account. Months after that credit she got several statements saying she still owed nothing.

"I got statements that said no payment due, I called them a dozen times and I got nowhere, said this can't be right.'

That didn't last long-- she soon got hit with a nearly $160.00 bill and discovered she had a balance of more than $800.00--far from her fixed amount. She called, and asked for a manager, "He said that's what it's going to be, have a nice day."

That's when she called 13 On Your Side. After contacting DTE the company released this statement... "In this case, when we realized there was an error with the customer's account, we made the necessary adjustments to address the issue. Also, we apologized for any inconvenience."
