KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) -- Consumers Energy is issuing a warning to residents about scam phone calls asking customers for utility payments.

The calls have been mainly coming into southwest Michigan.  Those who have received the calls say the caller claims that utility service will be disconnected unless a credit card payment is made over the phone.  There have also been reports of imposters going door-to-door.

Customers with questions or concerns that they may have participated in a scam should call Consumers Energy at 1-800-477-5050.

Most of the intended victims have not paid the imposter, and Consumers Energy wants to remind customers not to give money or personal information over the phone to anyone they do not know.

Tips on avoiding utility fraud are available on the Michigan Public Service Commission's web site: .
