Calvin College freshman Carissa Verkaik
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM)- Calvin College freshman Carissa Verkaik broke a 14-year old MIAA single game scoring record pouring in 46 points in a 93-77 win over Adrian Wednesday night. "I found out after the game," said Verkaik. "I heard someone say, 'that's the MIAA record too' and I'm like, 'really?' I had no idea."
Verkaik was nearly perfect. She made all three of her three point tries. She finished the game 18 of 20 from the floor and seven of eight from the free throw line. She shot the ball so well, head coach John Ross toyed with the idea of letting her try for 50 in the closing moments. "I looked up, she had 46. There was a minute and a half to go," said Ross. "We were up 16 and it was one of those things where I felt we had to do the right thing which was to pull her out of the game. There were a lot of people on the bench encouraging me to keep her in the game and go for 50 but I didn't think that was the right thing to do."
Verkaik and the Knights clinched the number two seed in the MIAA Tournament with the win.
