PENTWATER, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Mason County boy is being called a hero by firefighters for helping his grandparents and younger brother escape a house fire. The Pentwater Fire Department honored Deakon Raeth, 6, at a ceremony on Wednesday.

An electrical fire started in the Hart Township home of Deakon's grandparents early on Memorial Day morning. Deakon and his little brother were spending the night there.

"Adults were panicking, and he knew what to do," says his grandfather, Gary Prine.

Prine says Deakon got down onto the floor of the home and crawled to safety. She says he even tugged at her arm, convincing her the safest way to escape the fire was close to the ground.

"He showed me he was brave than I was," says grandmother Letica Prine. "He was calm and didn't panic."

Deakon recently learned how to escape from a fire when Pentwater firefighters held a demonstration at the boy's school. Firefighters used a fire prevention trailer borrowed from the Walkerville Fire Department.

This fall, Deakon and his family will take part in a new statewide fire safety campaign with the Michigan state fire marshal.
