CHEBOYGAN, Mich. (WZZM) - Michigan State Police have confirmed 19-year-old Joshua Stedman of Jenison was killed in a crash in northern Michigan Tuesday night.
The fatal crash happened at 6:41 p.m. on southbound I-75 near Hebron Town Hall Road, in Hebron Township.
According to the Michigan State Police, witnesses reported they were traveling southbound on I-75 when a vehicle driven by Stedman passed them at what they estimated to be over 100 m.p.h.
The vehicle left the roadway and struck several trees. Stedman was thrown from the vehicle. Witnesses who stopped to help performed CPR until Cheboygan Life Support arrived on the scene.
Stedman was the only one in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at Cheboygan Memorial Hospital.
State troopers are continuing to investigate the incident. It's unknown at this time if the driver was wearing a seatbelt or if alcohol was a factor.
Stedman graduated earlier this month from Jenison High School. News of his passing spread quickly among students and the rest of the community.
"It's really hard in the middle of the summer, especially with our graduates at this point in time," says Jenison school superintendent Tom TenBrink. "There hasn't been an outcry or need for the students to gather at the high school. Certainly we are open to that -- opening our media center for seniors who have graduated to come back. At this time we are trying to be supportive as we can to the family. As a Jenison community we are saddened by this. It is another tragic loss."
Administrators say his death follows that of Eric Helm, who died in an auto accident in January.
