DETROIT, Mich. (WZZM)- Michigan has a new governor - one who promises to "reinvent Michigan."

Republican Rick Snyder, unknown one year ago, will be the state's top executive come January.

Snyder won with 58 % of the vote while Bernero had 40% of the vote. That's about the same margin as most polls placed the two over the past several months.

The results really should surprise no one. With the state in recession for the past eight years, voters were ready for a change at the top of the state and they have one.

Snyder celebrated his victory at Detroit's Book Cadillac Westin hotel, a symbolic location because it's a piece of the state that's been reinvented, reinvigorated after 20 years of vacancy.  "Reinventing Michigan was the theme of Snyder's campaign.

Snyder is a moderate, a businessman with no political experience who said he would be "one tough nerd." His victory was apparent as soon as the polls closed Tuesday night. But it wasn't until three hours later that Snyder addressed the crowd inside the hotel's ballroom:

"It is time for us to come together as Michiganders, to stand up together to say here is the vision for the future. Here is a plan. Here's an attitude of action and a positive, forward looking inclusive fashion. And by doing that, by doing that in the foreseeable future, we will create more and better jobs. We will keep our young people here and we will be a great state again. Thank you so much." Snyder said.

Virg Bernero also addressed his crowd of supporters. He said, "It was a fight but it wasn't our time. I called Rick Snyder a few minutes ago and offered him full support as the new Governor as he takes on this enormous challenge and I know you do too."  He added, "We must not root for the failure of other side we must root for the success of Michigan.

Snyder will meet Wednesday morning with Governor Jennifer Granholm to help start the transition to his new position.

He'll meet with the media after that meeting.

WZZM 13's Peter Ross will have more on WZZM 13 News at 6 p.m. tonight.
