GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)-  Tuesday is National Mentoring Day, a time to recognize those who have positively influenced the lives of others and to convince people to consider taking the time to mentor.

One hour a week is the time commitment a person needs to give in order to be a mentor.

January has been designated National Mentoring Month here in Michigan and there's a big push for the recruitment of new mentors.

"That's the main reason for the day is to pay it forward by reaching out to somebody but also promote the mentoring program by committing to mentoring somebody else," explains longtime mentor Terry Gates.

Gates has been a local mentor for 13 years.

This past Saturday he attended "Mentoring Night at the Palace" at Auburn Hills.

During the Detroit Pistons versus Phoenix Suns game a special emphasis was placed on mentoring.

This year's theme is "Pass it On."

The Mentor Michigan website is a good resource to find out how to get involved in mentoring in your area by helping lift up those children who somehow fall between the cracks.

Gates says, "It happens in small steps but over the years you watch a person grow, a person be influenced by your presence in your life and just being a role model for them."
