LEAVITT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM)–A pilot from Hart is dead after a helicopter crash in Oceana County.

Oceana County sheriff's deputies say 49-year-old Thomas Slocum was flying his helicopter when the 1955 Bell Rotorcraft crashed into Tanner's Swamp, about two miles away from 168th Avenue in Leavitt Township. A passenger in the helicopter, 28-year-old Matt Williams of Hart, called 911 around 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Aero Med, the U.S. Coast Guard, Oceana County deputies, DNR officers, forest rangers and firefighters from three departments all responded to the crash. However the terrain was so rough, all terrain vehicles and rescue helicopters could not reach the victims. Rescuers had to carry out the victims, across two streams and downed trees.

Slocum died at the scene. Williams is at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition Saturday night.

The cause of the crash remains unclear.
