BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - Detectives are calling the mysterious disappearance of a Mecosta County lawyer bizarre. Fred Byrne, 49, left his mother's home in Holland Township on Tuesday and has not been seen since.

Byrne told relatives he was stopping at Rivertown Crossings Mall to buy a Valentine's gift for his wife before returning home to Big Rapids.

Thursday, his car was found 600 miles away, off a remote dirt road near the Mark Twain National Forest in Carter County, Missouri. His wallet and keys were in the car, but there was no sign of Byrne.

"The family states they have no ties to that area whatsoever," said Detective Brian Miller of the Big Rapids Public Safety Dept. "There was nothing in his behavior leading up to Tuesday that was suspicious in any way-- no marital strife, no problems."

Byrne and his wife have been married for 27 years and Detective Miller says investigators are looking for answers. "we are reaching out to anyone and everyone."

Detectives say they can't track Fred's cell phone or credit cards, because he didn't have any. There was no blood or sign of a struggle in his car, but investigators are bringing it back to Michigan for a more careful inspection.
